Kind residents and groups in Walsall give backing to Jamaica Hurricane Relief

Residents, churches and community organisations across Walsall are ramping up donation efforts in support of devastated communities in Jamaica following the ravaging Hurricane Melissa.

Among those running donation points are staff and volunteers at Walsall Black Sisters Collective (WSBC) based in Wednesbury Road near the town centre.

The centre's chief executive Maureen Lewis said: "Walsall BSC is honoured to stand in solidarity with the people of Jamaica following the devastating hurricane that left many families without homes, clothing, or even the crops that once sustained them.

"In some areas, nothing was left behind. In response, we proudly opened our doors as a community drop-off point—and the generosity has been overwhelming. Thanks to the kindness of individuals across Walsall and beyond, we’ve received an incredible range of donations.

"We extend our deepest thanks to everyone who has come together locally and nationally to show that we care, and we want to help to rebuild the small island of Jamaica."

In addition to goods donors have so far also handed over £2,000 which is being sent to the official Jamaican government appeal fund.

The centre is collecting dry goods, toiletries, cleaning supplies, household items such as bins and bedding, and vital financial contributions. All items and monetary gifts will be sent to to the Jamaican High Commission in London to be shipped directly to Jamaica via JLB Shipping.

The donation point based at the Black Women's Centre, Mayfield Workshops, 17 Wednesbury Road, Ws1 3RU will be open for drop-offs on Thursdays and Fridays from 12noon-5pm until November 28.
